Today in Tahoe History – March 27

March 27, 2017 Today in Tahoe History

Before US Hwy 50 was a paved road with an organized snow removal program, the opening of the road over Echo Summit each spring could vary by more than a month, depending on the depth of the drifts. Reports of road conditions were often supplied to local newspapers by eyewitnesses who had tried – and possibly failed – to make it over the top.

So here’s your road report for 96 years ago today: still a lot of shoveling to be done to make the road passable. It fact, 2-1/2 months later, it was still snowing, though not enough to prevent one’s going.
